Helping Schoolchildren in Africa

At the beginning of January, we announced a campaign to raise funds to feed African schoolchildren. We promised to match your donations on a 1:1 basis, up to $2,000. You responded generously, and we are now 3/4 of the way to our goal. In the next 5 days, we need to raise the remaining $500 in order to reach $2,000 and provide our $2,000 match. When we hit that goal and have $4,000 ready to send to the African schoolchildren, we are pleased to announce that our friends at Global Pearls will then provide a 2:1 match — for a grand total of $12,000! Those funds will be enough to provide hot meals for the schoolchildren on three days per week.

In case you missed our previous announcement about this campaign, here is the background information on the project:

Over the past few years, we have established a strong connection to a community-based organization called Community Relief and Development Action (COREDA) in Cameroon. Before making our first grant to COREDA in 2022, we confirmed that our funds could be sent to COREDA’s U.S.-based partner, a nonprofit named Global Pearls. Not only did Global Pearls vouch for COREDA, they also generously matched our donations.

In 2023, we funded hot meals and deworming for schoolchildren in Cameroon and would like to continue supporting that project. Here’s a brief report from COREDA:

We run an elementary school in Tiko, Cameroon, for orphans and internally displaced children, many of whom made dangerous journeys out of rebel-controlled territory to seek an education. Each day these young children had to choose between attending school or finding food, and it was heartbreaking to hear the children sob from hunger when they chose school. Additionally, many of the children were afflicted with intestinal worms, which are a common cause of diarrhea and abdominal pain among our children, and the worms exacerbate nutritional deficiencies.

Project results: All 181 of the children in the school are now receiving a nutritious meal once per week. 154 children also received deworming medicine (the parents/ guardians of 27 children did not consent to the medicine). A team consisting of one medical doctor and three nurses carried out the program, checking the vital signs of the children and administering the deworming medicine. Some children were referred elsewhere for further treatment. The overall health of the children at the school has improved significantly.

With your help, we can make more grants and donations. We may be small but we are mighty; since our Foundation was established in 2020, we have awarded more than $85,000 in grants and donations — normally to small, community-based nonprofits for whom our donations will make a big difference. The Healthier, Greener, Kinder Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public nonprofit organization, and your donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

How are organizational funds spent?

We are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing funding for animal welfare, environmental justice, food justice, and humanitarian projects, so any donations that you make will go directly to our programs. We do not have any paid employees, and our overhead costs are very low, mainly involving website maintenance, an insurance policy, and some outreach expenses. For further information, potential donors can contact us or review our financial information on GuideStar.

How are grantees selected & reviewed?

We will thoroughly review the recipients of our grants to ensure that your funds are being well spent, and you can watch our website and sign up for our e-newsletter to learn about the projects we have chosen to support.  Our review process involves a thorough examination of the materials that applicants have submitted in their application packages. We also check their financial information on GuideStar. Continued support from our Foundation for more than one year is dependent on the success of the project and on the grantee’s communication with us.
